Local Litter Hotspot Survey

Published Thu 14 Oct 2021

We have received the following email from Reece Taranto of Parks Victoria. Please help out with this worthwhile project.

I’m writing to request the input of your group to a short online survey for a litter management project Parks Victoria are collaborating on with the cities of Kingston, City of Greater Dandenong, City of Casey, Melbourne Water and the EPA.

As I’m sure you know, litter within the Lower Dandenong Creek area – which includes the Eumemmerring Creek, the lower reaches of Dandenong Creek, Patterson River and Mordialloc Creek – is having an ongoing and widespread negative effect on both community and environmental values.

The Lower Dandenong Creek Litter Collaboration is a great opportunity for litter management partners, as well as our community, to work together to better understand the litter issue in this system and help develop collaborative solutions.

Between the agencies we have sourced a lot of helpful data, including volumes of litter entering the bay, problem litter types, existing infrastructure and land use to help identify litter generation hotspots of regional significance. But that existing data does not reveal more local sites of litter accumulation and generation.

We are asking for your help, using your on-ground knowledge of the area, to map where litter accumulates on land or along waterways and where you have observed litter coming from (local shopping strips, schools, sports ovals etc.).

Your input will help our understanding of the litter issue in the catchment be as comprehensive as possible, so we can target interventions in the best way and improve the health of our open spaces, waterways and the bay.

The survey link is here: LDCLC - Local Litter Hotspot Survey (arcgis.com)

Feel free to forward this link on to any friends, family or other community groups that you think have good on-ground knowledge of the area – the more contributions from people in the know, the better! We have also shared this survey with the on-ground staff at each of the partner agencies.

The survey will be open until Monday November 15th; it is straightforward and only takes 5 minutes to complete and I have included more information on the project in the document attached. Click here.

If you have any questions or issues please get in touch with myself, or the project manager Trent Griffiths from Melbourne Water – trent.griffiths@melbournewater.com.au

Thanks in advance,
