We have received a courtesy email from the Parks Victoria Maintenance Dredging Team to let us know that maintenance dredging works around Mordialloc Creek entrance will need to take place sometime over the next week, weather permitting.
Recent hydrographic surveys indicate a build-up of sand is occurring within the navigation channel and will need to be removed.
The dredged sand will be deposited on the adjoining beach south of the Creek entrance where it can provide benefit to the beach profile, most likely at the northern end of the beach.
Coastal sands often contain fine particles and organic material, mostly seaweed, which can sometimes give it a dark colour and mild odour. While the freshly dredged sand may look unpleasant when it first comes out of the water, after several days’ exposure to the air and sun, the sand will bleach to the normal colour and lose any odour. Suspended particles in the water may create some local turbidity, but this will also dissipate and settle quickly once dredging ends.
Dredging may take between 3 and 8 days depending on weather conditions and the quantity of sand to be moved.
