Observational Car Challenge 1 May 2021
The gods smiled on us and we had a perfect autumn day for the challenge. Fifteen cars took
part with 43 people, including children, having lunch at our final destination, the Westernport
Hotel at Hastings. Fortunately, we had a private function room so that we were able to
celebrate in style. It was fabulous to see so many families.
Stops along the way included Langwarrin Flora and Fauna Park, Tully’s Corner Produce
Store (highly recommended for fresh food and produce, and gourmet deli items), an
interesting bridge at Mt Martha where the river goes over the road, and Montalto Winery and
Sculpture Park.
The challenge was hard fought with the final results being:
1 st Place: The Cops & Robbers team of Steve & Penny Beashel, Ben and Alice. 51 points.
2 nd Place: Kath Kim and Kel Team – Michael Ruhsam, Nat and Mia. 47 points.
3 rd Place: Alicia, Rhonda & Ollie. 47 points and 87 km.
4 th Place: Nicky and Geoff Kilner who missed out on third by 5km. 47 points and 92 km.
The challenge is not timed. Distance traveled in km is the deciding criterion when there is a tie.
First-timers Wayne Imlach and Peter Allnut received an encouragement award.
Many thanks to Helen Ruhsam for all her hard work and preparation. This was her third
MMYC car challenge and they just keep getting better! We are looking forward to next
year’s challenge.
