Update 19 June 2021:
Training Update at MMYC
Finally, we can say the Discover Sailing Centre is up and running.
As from the 2/4/21 we have been hosting 5 students from Patterson River Secondary College as part of their school sports curriculum.
We have completed 3 full days of training with this group and have a final race day to be completed at the start of term 3.
Skipper Steve Beashel has been conducting the training sessions with help from Skipper Carol Flanagan and Skipper Derek Haagsma. We also have help from Crewman Pat Cox and Crewman Geoff Kilner.
So far, the first group of budding sailors have completed 3 sessions of the Australian Sailing ‘Start Crewing’ curriculum.
The training has been conducted on the Island and onboard 2 members boats.
Steve Beashel: Stop the Clock, Austral 20.
Derek Haagsma: Tuscany, Austral 24.
Both of these boats have been assessed and approved by Australian Sailing as suitable training vessels.
Topics covered so far have included:
Boat and life jacket preparation,
Boats and equipment,
Skills and techniques,
Safety/Emergency procedures, and
Sailing Theory.
The response from all the students has been fantastic. They have all had a chance to put their new found knowledge in to action. The group has been very supportive of each other on and off the boats and have developed excellent communication and teamwork skills.
The response from teachers and parents at the Patterson River Secondary Collage has been extremely positive. They report back to us that the students have been really enjoying the sailing challenge and that their confidence has increased.
The school has also had a further 18 students register their interest in doing the training with us in 2022. We will have a further 5 students on board for training in semester 3 and 4 of this school year.
Our next contact for student training will be with Mordialloc Secondary College, and we are hoping to commence training in 2022 with this local college.
